Drape Series

poem by Alex J. Tavares

unfurl unfurl unfurl the banners of celebration
and pour incense in forms of clouds
in forms of pleasing foam
in forms of velvet touch
in forms of dancing boughs softer than snow
liquid to the warm hand softer than cotton
tickling the ostrich for her feathers
and fearing not its might legs
so no stroke of whip may swell of wound
the damaged flesh and weep of agony
the praying desire may be granted
by squeezing only breaths of silence
into the ocean of surplus air
that clouds may descend to play
and trees may swirl in gay
children drilling round a pool
with voices that are weaving drapes
with the clean pure dew
and the birds are fluting clues of spring
calling all to unfurl their banners of celebration
